Breaking Barriers: A panel discussion for Women in STEM

Our Chapter hosted a joint event with MedImmune/AstraZeneca entitled “Breaking BarriersPanel Discussion of Women in STEM!” on April 10th

The event included a  stellar panel of distinguished leaders followed by a networking reception, sponsored by MedImmune/AstraZeneca will follow the panel.

 


Speaker Bios:

Dr. Bahija Jallal is President of MedImmune, the global biologics research and development unit of AstraZeneca. She is also Executive Vice President of AstraZeneca and is a member of its senior executive team reporting to the CEO. Dr. Jallal joined MedImmune in March 2006. Dr. Jallal serves on the Board of Anthem, Inc. and is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Johns Hopkins University and the Board of Directors of the University of Maryland Health Sciences Research Park Corporation. Dr. Jallal has authored over 70 peer-reviewed publications and has more than 15 patents. She is a member of the American Association of Cancer Research and the American Association of Science. She is also the President of the Association of Women in Science. Last year, Dr. Jallal was named the 2017 Woman of the Year by the Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association.

Judy Costello is the Managing Director of Economic Development for BioHealth Innovation, Inc. (BHI). A longtime supporter of the region’s entrepreneur and start-up communities, Judy Costello joined BioHealth Innovation in August 2017. Prior to that, she served as Director of the Maryland Department of Commerce’s Office of BioHealth and Life Sciences and Deputy Director of the department’s BioMaryland Center. She previously worked for fifteen years for the Business Alliance organizing venture pitch forums, entrepreneur boot camps, tech transfer showcases, educational seminars, and other programs connecting entrepreneurs, faculty innovators, students, and industry leaders in Maryland, DC and Virginia with each other and with those providing funding and other resources to young companies.

Jim Massey is the Vice President, Global Sustainability at MedImmune.  Prior to this role, Jim served as the Vice President of Compliance Enablement and Assurance and as Senior Director within Science Units Compliance (with key accountability for Global Medical Affairs).  He has served in compliance leadership roles for North America and for MedImmune. During his highly successful and diverse 18-year career, Jim has held roles across compliance, sales, marketing, training and development in the consumer, pharmaceutical and biotech industries. He began his career at Johnson & Johnson as a sales representative.

 

Rajni Samavedam is a Principal with Booz Allen Hamilton where she provides leadership in the life sciences and research practice. She is experienced in clinical research, data sharing platforms, public health program planning and implementation, strategic planning and evaluation, and research portfolio analysis.  She has worked with various organizations in the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which she has supported for over 17 years. As a consultant to the federal govern­ment, she has led multi-million dollar programs, and led teams with skill sets ranging from clinical and basic research, portfolio analysis, data sharing policy and technology, software design and development, agile method­ology, cloud implementation, and stakeholder management. In addition, she has experience working with non-profits on data strategy. Prior to Booz Allen, she carried out epidemiologic research studies both domestically and internationally, has worked for state government, and also stood up a non-governmental organization in India focused on women and children health and the development of health education programs.
